London Calling
Students get an invite to London, to discuss new thinking on tackling crime.
On a very cold Thursday morning, 25th February at 7.30 am, a group of students from Bolton St Catherine’s Academy embarked the train at Bolton Train Station, headed for London.
They were invited to take part in the Design Out Crime Project. The 30 students had taken part in a workshop at school to come up with ideas to reduce crime, make the area look good and allow people to feel good about themselves.
The students travelled to the 02 arena and had a tour around, while the staff there were setting up the seating for the Lady Gaga Concert. They went to a special “VIP” area within the Arena, called the “Blue Room”, where they watched a DVD about tackling crime in local areas.
After a very long, hard day of meetings and walking around London, the group headed back to Euston Station, they had to go on two underground journeys to get there.
By the time the group got back to their train to head back to Bolton they were very tired, they just about managed to slump into their seats for the 2 hour journey back home.
Mr Caldwell who had been involved in organising the event said, “Everyone was really well behaved and were a credit to our Academy. They have done us proud.”
There will be more from this project in the Summer Term. Be sure to check out our website for updates. What do you think would help to reduce crime in our local area? If you have any ideas please send them in to scoop@boltonstcaterinesacademy.org.uk

New Social Area
A great place to relax, refuel and restore your energy!
Bolton St Catherine’s has a brand new, fully equipped social area. It has leather couches, really comfy chairs and even has flat screen televisions. It’s just a place to chill out, relax and get away from the teachers! (Which we all need from time to time).
Even the teachers like the social area, we asked some Year 7’s what they though of it. Rhianne Pritchard, year 7, said “I think that it’s a very nice place to chill and have a good time.”
Some students commented on how crowded it can get sometimes, but they still enjoy the vibe and appreciate somewhere really relaxing.
We Interviewed Miss Wells, who is on duty in the social area three times a week. “The Social Area gives a great opportunity for students at Bolton St Catherine’s Academy to mix with people from other forms”
Leading scientists and educational research has shown that by providing students with a stimulating and enriched learning environment will allow them to feel more confident and relaxed in their learning.
Bolton St Catherine’s Academy is due to get a re-build next year, teachers and building experts are meeting to discuss how the building will look and how the classrooms will be organised. The future developments of Bolton St Catherine’s Academy sound really exciting.
Athena PLTS Y7
Students in year 7 work in teams to develop their Personal, Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS).
ATHENA, held on a Friday morning for year 7, allows students to interact with their peers and work together to develop their skills. The aim is that students are equipped with the training to enter adult life as confident and capable individuals. As well as using the skills learnt in English, Maths and ICT, we work on developing skills in managing self; managing relationships with others; and managing own learning and work.
This half term we have been focussing on working as an individual within a team in order to achieve a common goal. The whole of year 7 is split into groups and go off working with Miss Parry, Dr Schofield, Mr Smith, Mr Duffy and Miss Spencer. Recently we made models of different types of buildings, another really exciting activity was when we were in Dr Schofield’s group and we learned how fireworks were made out of copper and different powders for colours and effects.
One of our favourite activities was having to taste different types of crisps and rate them against each other on different qualities, like taste, texture, freshness.
ATHENA always follows an assembly, at first we didn’t want to give up our form time for it, but once we got started with it and realised how much fun it is, we really look forward to it each week.
